1963
Two engineers, one idea
Richard MacNeal and Robert Schwendler found the MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation in Los Angeles — convinced that structures can be understood by computation.
1965
NASA's impossible brief
The Saturn V is too large, too expensive and too dangerous to test by trial and error. NASA commissions one unified program to predict structural behaviour — MSC helps build it.
1969
NASTRAN flies to the Moon
On 16 July, Apollo 11 lifts off — every critical structure analysed in NASTRAN (NASA STRuctural ANalysis) before a single bolt was torqued. Four days later, Armstrong steps onto the Moon.
1971
Moon technology goes to work
MSC Nastran is released commercially. The method that carried astronauts now designs aircraft, cars, ships, bridges and wind turbines.
1988
Hall of Fame
NASTRAN is inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame — recognised as one of the space technologies that created the greatest value on Earth.
Today
